Clear aligners have gained popularity among patients and dentists as they are comfortable to wear, unobtrusive in the mouth, and deliver reliable results. In this article, we discuss a clear aligner treatment timeline from start to finish.
On average, orthodontic treatment with clear aligners takes 6 to 24 months, with most patients completing treatment in 12 to 18 months. The amount of time you will need to allow for your treatment depends on these main factors:
Let us look at what happens during the course of an orthodontic treatment in more detail:
An orthodontic treatment always begins with a thorough examination of your issues, 3D digital scans, and X-rays. Then, your dentist will use the results of these exams to plan your treatment. Typically, specialized software is used to map your tooth movement throughout treatment and plan your custom aligner sequence. Once this process is complete, you will receive a preview of your final teeth and bite alignment, along with an accurate estimate of how long the entire process will take.
Once planning is complete, several sets of aligners will be custom-made for you. You will need to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours every day, switching to new sets every 1 to 2 weeks. Also, you will visit your dentist every 3 to 6 weeks to check the progress and implement adjustments if necessary.
You are likely to notice the first results of your treatment within 6 to 12 weeks, with small alignment improvements becoming visible, especially for crowded or rotated front teeth. During months 3 to 6, the results will become more apparent. You can expect major improvements by month 12.
Depending on the severity of your case, you can complete your initial tray series and achieve desired results by months 6 to 18. Then, your dentist might use additional trays, if necessary, to address any remaining small issues and ensure that all the teeth align properly.
In most cases, patients switch to retainers after their clear aligner treatment is complete. Custom-made retainers are typically worn at night to preserve the achieved results and prevent the teeth from shifting back. Some people may need to wear retainers for 1 to 3 years, while others may be advised to wear them indefinitely.
